Frequently Asked Questions
What is Counselling?
It is a process which seeks to help the person gain the ability to make choices
and feel more emotionally independent and happier.
It tackles any emotional or relations issues, such as anxiety, depression,
trauma, and obsessive behaviour.
What is the role of the Counsellor?
The counsellor offers a safe, non-judgmental and confidential environment,
where you can discuss your problems. This means exploring what lies behind
the present
difficulties and finding a better way to cope.
The counsellor can help in specific problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma,
loss, relationship problems, etc. The help can also be less specific with issues
such as self-esteem and well-being.
Another area of support from the counsellor is accepting the things you cannot
change, such as illness, disability or loss.
Through the relationship with the counsellor we gain understanding and are
able to make better choices about our future.
What is Psychodynamic Counselling?
Psychodynamic Counselling is based on the theory that we all have unconscious
feelings which result in unwanted behaviour. Those unconscious feelings can
be too painful to articulate or discuss with other people but nontheless they
affect
our daily life and sometimes result in symptoms such as anxiety, aggression,
self-harm or dependency on substances and affect our relations with others
close to us. Thus, by exploring those unconscious defenses, we learn to understand,
control and change ourselves.
What are the 'other' models?
There are many different approaches. The other common one is Cognitive Behaviour.
This theory emphasizes the relationship between behaviour and thought pattern.
By changing the way we think of a situation, we can alter our behaviour and
the way we deal with difficulties in our lives.
How often should I see the Counsellor?
Sessions are usually once a week for an hour and involve sitting face to face
with the counsellor without any disturbances. It is up to us to bring the problem
but then it is shared with the counselor. Everything said during the session
is confidential.
